The Corrs review – family folk-poppers surprise with grit, grunge and gothic drama

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 12 November 2024

    AO Arena, Manchester
The Irish band rip their wispy image apart with thunderous drums, crunchy guitars and full-throated vocals from an energetic Andrea Corr

There’s a French and Saunders skit from 1998 in which the comedy duo impersonate the Corrs, presenting the Irish family band not only as clones, but as moony-eyed new age folksters. It’s a fair representation of how the group were perceived at the time, their blend of soft rock and Celtic fusion planting them somewhere between Enya and Mirage-era Fleetwood Mac: the production of their earlier records definitely suffered from the blight that was mushy turn-of-the-millennium adult contemporary.

Tonight, however, as the band appear on stage amid the thunderous slams of Sharon Corr’s drums and a phasing synthesiser, crashing immediately into an epic rendition of Only When I Sleep, there’s none of that wispiness. The instrumentation is beefy, full of crunchy distorted guitars and toe-tingling bass, but the real grit is in frontwoman Andrea Corr’s voice. After skipping around the stage and twiddling with the black fabric of her dress, she steps up to the mic to deliver a full-throated vocal with gorgeous rough textures.

‘Democrats presented no alternative’: US voters on Trump’s win and where Harris went wrong

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 12 November 2024

Harris and Trump voters share their election opinions from a Guardian callout that received more than a thousand responses

“It’s like being sucked into a tsunami,” said Vivian Glover, a Kamala Harris voter from South Carolina, about the realisation that Donald Trump had been re-elected as president.

“The contrast between the two campaigns couldn’t have been more stark. On the one hand an intelligent, highly qualified public servant with a unifying message, and the opponent someone who epitomizes corruption, immorality, dishonesty, incompetence, racism, misogyny, tyranny and has clearly indicated his willingness to embrace authoritarianism.”

After Trump’s election, women are swearing off sex with men. This has been a long time coming | Cécile Simmons

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 12 November 2024 • 1 minute

The rise of ‘separatist’ movements rests on the idea that when misogyny reigns supreme, a sex strike can be a feminist act

It only took a few hours after news of Donald Trump’s re-election for a sad spectacle to unfold online and beyond. The far-right slogan “Your body, my choice”, tweeted by white nationalist pundit and organiser Nick Fuentes, spread online and off, sparking waves of abuse against women. “You no longer have rights” was one of many similar messages addressed to women by extreme misogynist Andrew Tate, who is facing trial for rape and human trafficking charges in Romania. (He denies these charges.) Meanwhile, calls for the creation of “ rape squads ” emerged in far-right groups.

This onslaught of violently misogynistic speech made even clearer what had already been plain to see: that too many men do not view women as people with equal dignity and rights but as inferior creatures to be coerced. And this in turn has sparked another reaction. Since Trump’s election, 4B, a South Korean-founded separatist movement of women who swear off relationships with men , has been trending on social media.

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 12 November 2024

Dish up the rice-sized pasta grains in a cheesy, herby sauce

If I could choose just one dish for a cold autumn evening, it would be this calming, gentle pasta recipe with its creamy texture and mild smoky notes. The cheese melts into strings.

Peel and thinly slice 3 cloves of garlic . Warm 30g of butter in a deep saucepan over a moderate heat, stir in the garlic and fry for a few minutes until pale gold.
