      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 10 November 2024

    • 2nd T20i: England, 161-3, bt West Indies, 158-8, by 7 wkts
    • Buttler smashes 83 off 45 balls in comfortable run chase

It’s win toss, win match in the Caribbean, as five games into this white-ball tour and all five have been won by the team for whom the coin fell in their favour.

England were the beneficiaries this time, as they won by seven wickets to take a two-nil lead in the five-match series. As the coin settled, Jos Buttler smiled, and his opposing captain Rovman Powell stuck a joking punch in his ribs. They knew how much this match, threatened by the potential for rain and starting at 4pm, rode on a matter of heads or tails.

The toy company Mattel says it is taking “immediate action” after mistakenly printing a pornographic website address on the packaging for dolls released to tie in with the upcoming Wicked film.

Over the weekend, individuals began sharing photos online of the dolls’ packaging, which showed a link to wicked.com, instead of wickedmovie.com. The address was printed on boxes for Glinda and Elphaba dolls, the main characters in Wicked, played in the film adaptation by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo respectively.

Sinner sees off De Minaur while Fritz beats angry Medvedev at ATP Finals

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 10 November 2024

    • Sinner defeats Australian opponent 6-3, 6-4 in Turin
    • Fritz triumphs 6-4, 6-3 in other Ilie Nastase Group match

Home favourite Jannik Sinner made the ideal start to the ATP Finals in Turin with a straight-sets victory over Alex de Minaur. Sinner recovered from losing his serve in the third game to ease to a 6-3, 6-4 victory in 85 minutes in his first match since winning the Rolex Shanghai Masters on October 13.

“He was playing great in the beginning of the match so I just tried to stay there mentally knowing that, hopefully, at some point my tennis would arrive,” the world No 1 said in an on-court interview. “It arrived quite early and I started to return very well, my serve for sure I have to improve but I’m very pleased about the win and hopefully this can give me the confidence for the next one.”

Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light review – six hours of utter TV magic

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 10 November 2024 • 1 minute

The final instalment of Hilary Mantel’s masterpiece is the most intricate television you are ever likely to see. It is so beautifully made it’s breathtaking

It seems pleasingly apropos that it is almost impossible to believe that the adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall appeared on our screens almost a decade ago. Whether you were reading her masterpiece or watching its fruits, carefully peeled and arranged for our delectation by screenwriter Peter Straughan and director Peter Kosminsky, the years between us and the Tudors shrank to nothingness. Time no longer.

The 2015 series covered the first two books in the trilogy – Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies – taking the story of Thomas Cromwell, Putney blacksmith’s boy and adviser to Henry VIII, through the negotiation of the end of the king’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon, his break with Rome, the crowning of Anne Boleyn and finally – though you ludicrously kept hoping otherwise – her execution, contrived to clear the way for Jane Seymour and the greater possibility of a male heir. Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light covers the last volume and final four years of Cromwell’s life. And it does so as beautifully, movingly and immaculately as before. It is breathtaking.

MTV Europe awards: Taylor Swift, Raye and Pet Shop Boys are big winners in Manchester

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 10 November 2024

Swift wins best artist award for third time as Liam Gallagher, Calvin Harris and Sabrina Carpenter also triumph

There was something different about the announcements on the Manchester tram network this week. Instead of the usual voice calling out Deansgate-Castlefield and St Peter’s Square, passengers have been listening to Rita Ora warning: “Make sure you plan your journey – it’s gonna be busy!”

The pop star was in Manchester on Sunday to host the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), one of the highlights of the global music calendar, at the city’s Co-op Live Arena.

Shoot to Kill: Terror on the Tube review – an extraordinary look at how Jean Charles de Menezes was killed

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 10 November 2024 • 1 minute

This mesmerising docuseries is full of astonishing interviews as it examines the Metropolitan police shooting of an innocent man – two weeks after the London bombings and terrorist threats of July 2005

This two-parter is a mesmerising feat of rigorous documentary-making. For the first time, the unnamed Metropolitan police officer who shot and killed Jean Charles de Menezes speaks out publicly, giving a raw and detailed interview about what happened on the morning of 22 July, 2005, and in the years that followed. De Menezes was an electrician from Brazil, taking the London Underground to work from Stockwell station. An innocent man, he was wrongly suspected of being a suicide bomber. He was shot once in the shoulder and seven times in the head.

Over two gripping episodes, this documentary lays the foundations for its story and then unpicks every aspect of it, examining each element carefully, critically and with compassion, from a distance of 20 years later. Part one is all atmosphere, eerily recreating what ITV News producer Neil Garrett calls “a febrile time” in the city. London was still celebrating the decision to award it the 2012 Olympic Games when, on 7 July, four suicide bombers detonated explosives on the transport system, killing 52 and injuring more than 700 people.

Do England’s repeated failures mean Steve Borthwick’s system is flawed? | Robert Kitson

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 10 November 2024

Head coach’s gameplan exploded in his face again against Australia. South Africa are next … do the players trust it?

One of the all-time great Wallaby Test victories has left England up a gum tree of their own making. Clearly Australia deserve huge praise for Saturday’s spectacular ram raid, topped off by a record for points scored in this fixture at Twickenham. For the home side, however, a recurring failure to close out big games is now the subject of mounting scrutiny.

Scoring five tries and 37 points, for instance, should be enough to win any Test match. But only last March England scored 31 points in Lyon and still lost to France . Yet another disturbing pattern is emerging, this time around their defensive solidity. It makes for cracking entertainment for neutrals, less so for those England fans who still have any hair left to pull out.
