Everton fans on the end of a Goodison era: ‘I’ll be thinking about my dad, my brothers, my son’

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 16 May 2025 • 1 minute

As ‘The Grand Old Lady’ prepares to host its last men’s match, Everton fans reveal what the ground means to them

An era lasting 133 years comes to an end this Sunday as Everton’s men’s team play their final game at Goodison Park. In 1892 the team left their former home at Anfield – which Liverpool FC adopted soon after – upping sticks due to an argument over rent, to set up a new home, a short walk across Stanley Park. Goodison Park became the first major football venue built in England and since then no other English football ground has staged more top-level men’s matches.

But it seems the impending bulldozers have performed a welcome U-turn – a deal to have the women’s team playing there has just been announced . Despite the US owners confirming the ground will become the country’s first major stadium to be dedicated to a women’s team, everyone knows it won’t be quite the same place. It seems like there will have to be structural changes including the taking out of seats in the top decks to reduce the capacity. Perhaps Everton will also turn Goodison into some sort of museum, where in 20 or 30 years people will still be wandering in, scratching their heads at the way football used to be watched.

Ukraine war briefing: Putin stays home and fires a general instead of peace talks

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 16 May 2025 • 2 minutes

Gen. Oleg Salyukov is the latest high-ranking military figure to be dismissed; Germany’s Merz says EU sanctions on Russia ready for Tuesday. What we know on day 1,178

Vladimir Putin has sacked the chief of the Russian military’s land forces , Gen. Oleg Salyukov, according to a decree published by the Kremlin, in the latest removal of a high-profile figure from Russia’s military during its war on Ukraine. Salyukov, 70, will become a deputy to the also-sacked defence minister Sergei Shoigu , who was removed in 2024 and made secretary of the security council.

The development came as the Russian president snubbed peace talks that he suggested in Turkey with Ukraine . Putin instead sent a lower-level delegation to Istanbul , and Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy – who had promised to attend if Putin did – reciprocated with a Ukrainian negotiating contingent . Putin had insisted on the Istanbul meeting instead of agreeing to the longstanding offer by Ukraine and its allies of a 30-day unconditional ceasefire.

Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, said Putin and Russia would face new sanctions as a consequence. “The fact that President Zelenskyy travelled to Istanbul despite this is an enormous gesture,” Merz posted. “Putin didn’t show up – and that put him in the wrong. A new sanctions package is ready. We will adopt it in Brussels on Tuesday.”

UK prime minister Keir Starmer accused Putin of stymying progress on peace. “There was only one country that started this conflict – that was Russia. That was Putin,” he said, speaking in Albania. “There’s only one country now standing in the way of peace – that is Russia. That is Putin.” There’s only one country now standing in the way of peace – that is Russia. That is Putin.”

France’s foreign minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, echoed that sentiment: “In front of Ukrainians, there is an empty chair, one that should have been occupied by Vladimir Putin,” he said. Putin “is dragging his feet and in all evidence does not want to enter into these peace discussions.”

Due to Putin’s no-show , it appeared that any talks taking place would only begin in earnest on Friday, under Turkey’s supervision. Zelenskyy on Thursday arrived in Turkey’s capital, Ankara, for separate meetings, having said he would meet Putin in Istanbul if the Russian president arrived.

Late on Thursday, Turkey’s foreign minister, Hakan Fidan, met the Russian delegation . “The meeting has ended. Tomorrow there will be more talks in different formats,” said a Turkish foreign ministry source, indicating that “trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine and Turkey are on the agenda”.

The US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, said on Thursday: “I want to be frank. I don’t think we have high expectations of what will happen tomorrow.” The top US diplomat described the current state of the talks to end the war as a “logjam” that only Donald Trump could break.

Trump, the US president, offered a tangled version of events: “Obviously he wasn’t going to go,” Trump said of Putin. “He was going to go, but he thought I was going to go. He wasn’t going if I wasn’t there.” He told reporters on Air Force One: “ I don’t believe anything’s going to happen, whether you like it or not, until he and I get together .”

I want a relationship, not out of love or passion, but out of fear of the future. Is this selfish? | Leading questions

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 16 May 2025

Lots of the reasons we want a relationship boil off to not much liking the look of life without one, advice columnist Eleanor Gordon-Smith writes. Luckily, lots of people want a relationship for partly these reasons

I’ve come to a moment in my life I never expected; I’m contemplating starting a relationship, not out of love or passion, but out of fear – fear of the future. I always thought I’d be above such reasoning. But witnessing illness up close, seeing the care my father received from his wife and us children, the comfort of not being alone in a hospital bed, shook me more than I was prepared for.

It’s a quiet but profound shift inside me. I stopped seeking out companionship a few years ago, deliberately. I did try but none of the few women I dated stirred anything close to love in me. So, as a 55-year-old man, I told myself it just wasn’t worth it: the arguments, the jealousy, the constant need to defend one’s need for solitude – especially for someone like me, deeply introverted by nature.

Police raid Oregon safari park amid reports of starving lions and dead tiger left for months

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 16 May 2025

West Coast Game Park Safari, popular attraction that has more than 450 animals, accused of multiple violations

A dead tiger, left in a freezer for months. Starving lions and leopards. Animals dying without medical attention. One full-time staffer feeding over 300 animals. According to police and USDA inspection reports , that’s the state of affairs at Oregon’s West Coast Game Park Safari .

State police served multiple search warrants at the south Oregon property on Thursday as part of a “lengthy” criminal investigation. The park is a regional attraction, with over 450 animals across 75 species, and has been in operation since 1969. USDA reports in recent years have noted consistent violations.

Rory McIlroy struggles with driver as debutant Gerard makes fast start to US PGA

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 16 May 2025

    • Masters champion signs for disappointing 74
    • Ryder Cup captain Donald shoots a bogey-free 67

In terms of US PGA Championship shocks, nothing is likely to beat the 2024 sight of Scottie Scheffler in a prison jumpsuit in the hours preceding his second round at Valhalla. The return of this major was, however, dramatic enough.

So much for Quail Hollow as Rory’s playground. Rory McIlroy, fresh from Masters glory, opened with a three-over 74. This was not in anybody’s script. Luke Donald, McIlroy’s Ryder Cup captain, last posted a major top 10 in 2013. Donald produced a 67 that rolled back the years and defied seasoned analysts who insisted only big hitters can master this major property.
