With the Tories beaten, Labour’s next threat comes from even further right

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 15 November 2024

Reform may well be Labour’s new main opponent, and the next battleground may not be where anyone expected

Two key rules of politics are to always look ahead, and to understand your opponent. And so it is that just months after crushing the Conservatives in a general election, many Labour MPs are bracing for fresh challenges and a new foe – Reform UK.

Nigel Farage’s party is in parliamentary terms a minnow, its five MPs giving it little more than 1% of the Commons strength enjoyed by Keir Starmer. But many within Labour believe that by the time of the next election, things could be very different.

England and Spain draw as respect shines through on path to progress

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 15 November 2024

Stars of tomorrow, including under-21 debutant Jobe Bellingham, swap shirts and stories in goalless friendly

Dean Huijsen revived an old tradition here. When was the last time you saw a footballer not just swap shirts with his opponent but immediately put it on too? As the final whistle went, the Bournemouth defender who was born in Amsterdam but represents Spain where he was raised, made straight for Samuel Iling-Junior who, like him, had played at Juventus. He moved like a young man on a mission, which it turned out he was. They embraced and when Huijsen finally walked off he was wearing white, a No 14 on the back.

It had been that kind of night, a familiarity and a sort of mutual admiration about the place, something of themselves seen in each other. Something shared, and not just, as it turned out, the scoreline. At the end, ball boys holding camera phones had run on seeking out Jobe Bellingham, who had played over an hour on his U21 debut, while players from each side made their way towards familiar faces, of which there were many. This was a friendly that was, well, friendly.

Ireland hold off Argentina’s fightback after making rapid start

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 15 November 2024

    • Ireland 22-19 Argentina
    • Three first-half tries enough for Andy Farrell’s side

Jeopardy is a word with plenty of currency in rugby these days. Mostly it’s used in reference to how competitions are structured, but also in describing individual matches. This one had plenty. Not always evident, especially in the first half when Ireland looked a good deal better than against the All Blacks. But the race down the home straight, with Argentina a man down, had heaps of it. When at last the pressure was relieved for the home team pretty much all of them called the knock on.

By way of compensation after last week the light rain made its way elsewhere well before kick off, so we had a game with fewer stoppages and, mercifully, fewer scrums: just one in the opening quarter. And plenty of quick, watchable rugby.

McGinn ends Scotland’s drought with Nations League winner against Croatia

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 15 November 2024

Weeks after Cristiano Ronaldo was reduced to ranting and raving on the south side of Glasgow, another icon of international football was left with a bloody nose by Scotland.

Luka Modric and Croatia played the entire second half of this tie with 10 men, the consequence of a red card for Petar Sucic. Scottish patience won the day by a single John McGinn goal in a scratchy contest, leaving them with aspirations of remaining at the top table in this competition after all. Suddenly Monday’s trip to face Poland in Warsaw has huge meaning for Steve Clarke, whose team could now finish third in Group A1.
