UK court sides with Icelandic firm over artist’s spoof corruption apology

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 14 November 2024

Judge considering complaint by fishing firm Samherji rules artist Odee unlikely to be able to defend work as parody

The property rights of Iceland’s largest fishing company prevail over the right to artistic expression of an artist who spoofed the firm’s website to draw attention to a high-profile corruption scandal, London’s high court has ruled.

For his 2023 work We’re Sorry , the Icelandic artist Oddur Eysteinn Friðriksson, who goes by the moniker Odee, copied the corporate identity of Samherji, a major supplier to Britain’s fish and chips industry, and uploaded on to the spoof website a statement titled “Samherji Apologizes, Pledges Restitution and Cooperation with Authorities”.

A dream day for Labour as opposition is reduced to noises off | John Crace

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 14 November 2024

Reeves is untroubled by a financially illiterate Tory leader, while Starmer allows himself a minor celebration

This was the sort of day of which all governments dream. A day in which all opposition was reduced to noises off at best. When no crises were on the horizon and most of Westminster was fast asleep. When ministers could get on with their jobs with no outside interventions. A day when the government got to control the news grid.

Over in the Treasury, Rachel Reeves was putting the final touches to her Mansion House speech. Her chance to mend fences with the City after raising employers’ national insurance contributions in the budget. Still, at least they vaguely understood the numbers. Kemi Badenoch had proved herself to be totally financially illiterate at the previous day’s prime minister’s questions. For Rachel, a top Conservative team of Kemi, Mel Stride, Priti Patel and Chris Philp was a dream quartet. Not all chancellors are so blessed.

My moth hell has given me sympathy for all fellow sufferers – even the 1% | Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 14 November 2024 • 1 minute

When infestations affect Notting Hill billionaires, it reminds you that it’s the little winged bastards who truly own this city

While reading of the case of the super-rich couple suing the previous owners of their west London mansion over its moth infestation , one particularly detail prompted warm memories. Iya Patarkatsishvili and Yevhen Hunyak had to tip away glasses of wine after discovering moths floating in them, Hunyak told the court. Ah yes, I thought, I too have found a moth taking a little dip in my tipple, though I’ll admit that I simply fished him out rather than waste a glass. Worse, mine only contained Tesco’s finest wine, as opposed to, you know, the world’s.

Moths, it seems, pay no attention to social class. Whether you are a lowly renter in a poky flat, such as I, or the daughter of a Georgian billionaire; if you live in London, they are coming for you. Moths, like mice in the tube, are simply a fact of living in this city, so commonplace as to be almost unremarkable. Even when waging daily battle against them, you sort of forget about them; their soft fluttering wings are a kind of inaudible mood music, until someone who has recently moved here says, “What’s with all the moths?”, and you remember the bastards that truly own this city.

The Pirelli calendar’s bringing sexy back – but is it actually sexy?

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 14 November 2024

In this week’s newsletter: Stars such as John Boyega have stripped off for racy shots, but insiders wonder how it lands in the post #MeToo era

A man, naked aside from a pair of tiny briefs kneels in the sea as waves crash into his muscled torso. A woman stands on a shoreline, nude except for a fallen palm tree covering her chest and pelvis. Another kneels unclothed in the sand, covering herself with a broken frond. These scenes may sound as if they’re ripped from a Jilly Cooper novel, but they are, in fact, shots from another emblem of unabashed sexuality: the latest Pirelli calendar.

Launched on Tuesday and featuring celebrities including John Boyega, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hunter Schafer and Simone Ashley, it is the latest calendar by an Italian tyre company that, for all its flaws, has become an unlikely cultural bellwether. It is not available to buy, but is sent to corporate clients and friends of the brand.
