      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 13 November 2024

A woman who claims to have been raped and trafficked while working for Mohamed Al Fayed has filed a legal claim in a US court to oblige his surviving younger brother to give evidence about his alleged knowledge of the crimes.

The application filed at the US district court for Connecticut claims Ali Fayed, 80, has “unique and critical evidence” to give about a “more than two-decade-long trafficking scheme that ensnared and irrevocably injured what is reported to be more than 100 women”.

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 13 November 2024

    • Kane asks if players are absent due to ‘tough period’
    • Captain praises Thomas Tuchel’s ‘amazing brain’

Harry Kane has delivered a slapdown to England’s long list of absentees, saying that club should never come before country and suggesting that certain players have used the packed calendar as an excuse to withdraw from Lee Carsley’s final camp in charge.

England’s captain and record goalscorer has never looked to shy away from international duty, even when he has been struggling with injury or fatigue, and he is frustrated that the sense of pride in the shirt seems to have disappeared since the departure of Gareth Southgate in July.

Researchers in California have discovered a new species of sea slug off the Pacific coast in an area of deep sea known as the midnight zone.

A team with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute first came across the creature, which they dubbed the “mystery mollusc” in 2000 at 8,576ft (2,613 meters), and spent years documenting the sea slug in order to “prepare the most comprehensive description of a deep-sea animal ever made”.

    • Cipriani feels he was dropped for standing up to coach
    • Former fly-half returns for cross-code MND charity match

Danny Cipriani has become the latest former England star to weigh in with criticism of Eddie Jones, insisting he felt the Australian refused to select him at Test level because he “couldn’t be bullied” by Jones.

Cipriani will return to a rugby field this weekend when he takes part in the inaugural 745 Game, a cross-code hybrid match featuring some of rugby union and league’s biggest names to raise money for those living with motor neurone disease. The event, which will be held at Headingley, was devised by Rob Burrow and Ed Slater before the former died earlier this year.

England will not ‘shut up shop’ against South Africa, insists Henry Slade

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 13 November 2024

    • Slade says squad won’t change mindset on Saturday
    • England have slipped to seventh in world rankings

England are looking to banish their autumn frustrations at South Africa’s expense this Saturday and have vowed “not to shut up shop” against the reigning world champions. Successive defeats to New Zealand and Australia have seen Steve Borthwick’s side sink to seventh in the world rankings but the players insist they can still confound expectations and turn their month around.

Rather than ditching the high-risk defensive system that has so far conceded eight tries in two games this month, England also intend to double down and be even more aggressive with and without the ball in their first rematch against the Springboks since last year’s agonising World Cup semi-final defeat.

    • Lineker to present BBC live football until 2026 World Cup

Gary Lineker has stepped down from his role as presenter of Sports Personality of the Year (Spoty), the BBC has confirmed. It follows Tuesday’s announcement that the 63-year-old will stop presenting Match of the Day (MOTD) at the end of the current Premier League season, but will remain with the BBC after both parties agreed to a contract extension through to the 2026 World Cup.

The Guardian view on NHS reform: evidence not dogma should be the guide | Editorial

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 13 November 2024

The health secretary is right to link investment to accountability, but he must be wary of creating perverse incentives

For any government contemplating NHS reform, the 2012 Health and Social Care Act is a textbook case of what not to do. Despite promises of “no more pointless reorganisations”, the Tory health secretary Andrew Lansley did just that, abolishing management tiers and imposing new care commissioning and competition systems on reluctant doctors.

The whole thing was a political nightmare that wasted resources, demoralised staff and undermined public confidence. In an independent report published earlier this year, Lord Darzi described the Lansley method as “ scorched earth ”, from which NHS management capacity has not yet fully recovered. And that was before the full social cost of austerity had weighed on the health service, and before it had been battered by the Covid pandemic.
