Apple responds to iOS 15.4 battery drain on iPhones — here’s the advice that probably applies to any OS

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 23 March, 2022

Apple's response to the issues raised was: “Thanks for reaching out! We'll be happy to help. It's normal for your apps and features to need to adjust up to 48 hours after an update".

That is quite true, and also sometimes an OS needs even a second reboot for all updates to apply. Usually this will sort out any oddities after an OS upgrade.

How Collections Work After Latest Kindle Update - Nice Options, But As Usual Confusion Sown By Amazon

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 23 March, 2022 • 1 minute

There’s now different ways to view collections on Kindles, and it can be rather confusing initially. With two separate menus to filter content, the new UI isn’t very intuitive, and there’s no explanation about how things are supposed to work now, so I can see why some people are having problems with it.

There are two different ways to sort collections, and the filtering option for collections doesn’t appear with the default option selected in settings (brilliant). If you want to view your collections in list view, try using a different viewing option in settings. One will show all your collections and all the books added to those collections in one long list, or you can select to just show collections that you’ve marked as favourites in the main list.

    • How Collections Work After Latest Kindle Update

Now that Amazon has started rolling out the new user interface to all Kindle ereaders dating back to the Kindle Paperwhite 3 that was released in 2015, there's some confusion about changes made to the collections feature. There's now different ways to view collections on Kindles and it can be rather confusing initially. With two

How the Backdrop CMS community uses Zulip for its open source chat tool - An alternative to Slack, RocketChat, etc

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 23 March, 2022

The most innovative feature in Zulip is the ability to create topics (or tags) within a stream—the Zulip equivalent of a channel. This makes it possible to view incoming messages in a single chronological stream, as we were used to in Gitter. However, users can also tag each message with a topic and filter them in order to view all the individual messages belonging to one topic independently.

We hear so often about Slack, and even RocketChat, for this type of collaboration, but Zulip is also an excellent open source option, which is well worth consideration too.

Docker Punching Holes Through Your VPS Firewall? This Is How I Solved It

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 22 March, 2022

    https://upload.movim.eu/files/62f168f3fbecac605d21a105beda461820293db1/iU3m9lVt0LLO/Docker_VPS.jpg

Yes, Docker containers automatically reconfigure the IPTable rules, and do not show up under UFW status as opened ports in your VPS firewall. This can leave your management containers wide open. Most docker container tutorials only use examples of how to do basic port mapping, and this is what exposes those ports.

I explain what is happening with this, and which of the three options I found easiest to make sure only the essential ports are open.

3 Ways to Define Docker Volumes Explained in 6 Minutes

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 21 March, 2022

Docker containers are great (my opinion) due to their ease of deployment and updating, as well as better resource usage for multiple concurrent services on a server. One could also argue they offer better security due to the potential ways you can isolate them from each other, and even your network (see an upcoming video of mine about this point).

A docker container on its own though does not retain any transactional data (persistence) if it is destroyed or updated. To achieve persistence, one creates volumes, which essentially map locations out to the OS side. Destroy or update the container, and it can still read that data from the volume.

This video explains quite clearly the 3 different ways to define such volumes.

13 of the best free open source apps for Android

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 21 March, 2022

Open source apps offer Android users excellent alternatives to their mainstream competitors. Notably, as their source code is accessible to anyone, savvy users can see exactly what's going on under the hood. And even though open source apps can track you, it is impossible to do this without the users' knowledge. There's also more community involvement with open source projects. The most popular open source apps are regularly vetted by users, to ensure a high quality is maintained.

Installing open source apps is a fantastic way of limiting your reliance on proprietary software while retaining the benefits of the services provided by your phone manufacturer. It's also worth noting that the default apps that come with your phone are not necessarily the best ones out there. You can get a lot of value from 3rd party camera apps, for example.

Touch-sensitive concrete technology could revolutionise security in South Africa - Even replace electric fences

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 21 March, 2022

Andre Broekman, a Civil Engineering PhD candidate at the University of Pretoria, has developed touch-sensitive concrete — a technology that could transform home and business security in South Africa.

This could reduce the need for electric fencing, allowing South Africans to protect their properties and businesses with an invisible solution. The technology also has the potential to replace internal alarm systems by implementing it in the flooring of a building.

Broekman explained that the technology could also be used to aid the visually impaired. His prototype keyboard has tactile concrete keys engraved with symbols.

Here are all the S Pen features and functions on the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra because no stylus is just intended for plain writing

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 20 March, 2022 • 1 minute

The Samsung Galaxy S Ultra lineup officially succeeds the Galaxy Note lineup, meaning that the S Pen is here to stay. In fact, we can even hope to see Samsung’s foldables come with S Pen support and even an integrated S Pen if space allows for it. The Galaxy Note series has its fans who know all about the S Pen and its features. But an integrated S Pen is still new for the S series, and Samsung provides a fair few features that take advantage of the active stylus.

So many people just use a pen or stylus for plain writing. But as I discovered with my iPad's Pencil, there was a lot more to master in terms of tricks and tips for really useful additional features. What I really like about what Samsung has done, is with their embedding of the pen inside the body of the device/ Very Applish! I mean, who'd magnetically stick a very expensive Pencil on the outside where it can just get bumped off (mind you, I think Samsung did the same with their new Tabs, unlike my old Samsung Tab which also had its stylus embedded)?

S Pen Features covered in this article:

    • Screen Off Memo
    • Samsung Notes app
    • Air Actions
    • Smart Select
    • Screen Write
    • Penup
    • Coloring
    • Live Messages
    • AR Doodle
    • Translate
    • Magnify
    • Glance
    • Bixby Vision
