6 Best Free and Open Source Whiteboard Applications for Linux Systems

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 8 February 2022

In general, a digital whiteboard is a tool that contains a large interactive display in the form of a whiteboard. Some examples of whiteboard devices are – Tab, large-screen mobile phones, touch screen laptops, surface displays.

If an instructor uses a whiteboard, you can draw, write or manipulate elements on those device screens using a touch-sensitive pen, stylus, finger or mouse. That means you can drag, click, erase, draw – do everything on the whiteboard that can be done on a piece of paper using a pen.

But to do all those, you need software that supports all those functionalities. That means bridging the gap between your touch and the display.

Now, there are many commercial applications available for this work. But the linked article talks about some of the best free and open-source whiteboard applications that are available for Linux Systems.

Unlike most browsers on iOS, the Documents app can render offline JavaScript and web pages from saved files

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 5 February 2022

Whilst trying to get Wordle to run offline on iOS, I noticed neither Safari, Firefox nor Brave would render the offline JavaScript files (apparently all the browsers on iOS have to use the underlying Safari engine, and we know how Apple restricts nice things).

This is how I came upon the Documents app which can not only do this rendering easily, it also connects to various cloud storage services, can annotate PDFs, opens any file type, has a VPN, and a bunch more stuff all from a single app. Some features like rendering to PDF, though, are pay to use.

In retrospect, I found out that Safari's offline Reading List function would handle Wordle, but it is nice to know that Documents can actually do so many things inside a single app. And if Wordle has finally gone, then the offline Reading List mode won't be able to save it for offline use (it has to have been saved before the site goes offline), but Documents will still be able to do the job if you have obtained the files later on.

Confessions of a Social Media Influencer: Much of it is Branding and Fake Positivity

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 4 February 2022

We often consume edited and fictional content unknowingly on social media. We forget that people can simply make things up and present it as truth. "When I see a fellow fitness influencer post a picture of their fit, slender body, I assume that’s what their body actually looks like." Social media has exposed the fragility of truth. What is clear is that this misinformation is harmful to its users—particularly the ones most vulnerable, children and adolescents.

Yes, certainly no surprise! It is well worth remembering that so much of what we see online is really fake, but the bottom line is fake positivity gets followers and views, whilst honesty about sadness and depression generally does not. Anyway, exposing your sadness and depression online could actually cause more problems and issues for an individual, and we've even seen individuals committing suicide over replies and comments sent to them.

So if you're a parent, it is probably worth sharing the linked article below with your kids.

AltStore is a way to install, and use, sideloaded apps to an iPhone without jailbreaking

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 4 February 2022

    https://upload.movim.eu/files/62f168f3fbecac605d21a105beda461820293db1/qWt3UO2nLjvd/install-altstore.jpg

This app store basically allows you to sideload any .ipa file onto your iPhone. That does come with the risks associated wirth obtaining apps from unknown sources, but it is nice to know you can do it.

The only requirement is that you need a Windows or macOS PC (USB or WiFi connection) for this to work for the installations themselves. There are also some specific steps to be followed to install the AltStore app itself.

A major focus of these apps seem to be 3rd party game emulators.

Buildah is an open source tool for building your own container from scratch

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 3 February 2022

Containers are run in the cloud. That's because container technology allows websites and web apps to spawn fresh copies of themselves as demand increases. They're the reason hundreds of millions of people can use popular sites without those sites buckling under the pressure of global traffic.

Containers are a Linux technology, meaning that they rely on code (specifically cgroups and namespaces) unique to the Linux kernel, so when you run a container, you're running Linux. Using container images from sites like quay.io and dockerhub.io, most people build new containers specific to their application or use case.

But that makes some people wonder: If my container comes from a developer building on top of another developer's container, where do those containers come from? Don't worry, it's not turtles all the way down. You can build a container from scratch, and there's a great open source tool called Buildah to help you do it.

Apple Podcasts's store ratings have little to do with the app - Really consider good 3rd party podcast players instead

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 3 February 2022

That’s right: they’re reviews of the podcasts themselves, not the Apple Podcasts app. And that is an extremely convenient situation for Apple because actual reviews of the Apple Podcasts app most definitely do not trend toward five stars. In fact, they trend toward an abysmal 1.8-star score because the app has been remarkably buggy for months.

This is particular unfair to really excellent podcast players such as Pocket Casts, Player FM, and others that provide all sorts of other useful features, and actually work.

The content remains the same no matter what podcast player you use, but the features and quality of the playback experience depending on what app you choose.

Seriously, these Big Tech companies are not so good at innovating, or staying very long with a product. This is why they often throw money at something, and buy their "competitor" out. Apps such as Pocket Casts and Player FM exist only because of what they do very well.... think about that.

Raspberry Pi Raspbian OS is finally 64-bit

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 2 February 2022

The ARMv8-A architecture, which encompasses the 64-bit AArch64 architecture and associated A64 instruction set, was first introduced into the Raspberry Pi line with Raspberry Pi 3 in 2016. From that point on, it has been possible to run a full 64-bit operating system on their flagship products, and many third-party operating systems have long been available.

However, they had continued to build their Raspberry Pi OS releases on the 32-bit Raspbian platform, aiming to maximise compatibility between devices and to avoid customer confusion.

But as of Feb 2022, customers are now declared savvy enough to manage a 64-bit OS ;-)

How to Share Your Entire Steam Library With Your Friends - You can enable Steam's "Family Sharing" feature for up to five friends

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 2 February 2022

Buying games from an online marketplace like Steam has a lot of advantages. It’s instant, there are frequent discounts, and the data is a lot easier to manage. And of course you can buy once for Windows, and use the same game on Linux and macOS if it can run there.

The post below explains how to set up the sharing, but note it needs to be done from the Steam app and not a browser page, and you need to have 2FA enabled.

Tidepool - open source diabetes software makes diabetes software more accessible, but also their employee handbooks and kanban boards

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 2 February 2022

Tidepool's diabetes management software is an open source platform, free for both clinicians and people impacted by diabetes. And, because the company is a non-profit, it also operates according to the transparency rules that govern 501(c)(3) organizations.

Tidepool has developed an ecosystem of products that integrate diabetes data from over 60 different insulin pumps, blood glucose meters, and continuous glucose monitors into a single, intuitive user interface. People with diabetes, their care teams, and clinicians can view and analyse data, then discuss potential treatment adjustments.

Tidepool's employee handbook is available for others to use or even copy as a start for their own operations. Likewise, its kanban boards used to manage project tasks are publicly available. If someone in the diabetes or development community wanted to see what was happening in an upcoming sprint, they could dig in and follow a task from assessment and development, to review and testing, all the way through to approval and deployment.
