Hiking Project - A free crowd-sourced hiking guide with a social aspect, built by hikers like you for iOS and Android

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 25 October 2021 • 1 minute

The information on Hiking Project is crowd-sourced, contributed by passionate users excited to share their knowledge of local trails with others. Anyone can share their experiences: add your favourite trails and photos, give ratings, post comments, improve existing content and spread the word about recommended routes. Your expertise brings an authentic voice to each trail and route.

So no features like overdue alerts to contacts or off-route alerting, but you can view your location on offline maps, record new trails, and share comments with others about conditions on a trail. A trail view shows the elevation overview, distance, hiker ratings scores, description with info, photos, driving directions to the start point, and recent feedback from other hikers on conditions. I found a few trails in my neighbourhood (56 in South Africa), so your mileage will certainly vary by how active hikers in your area are who use the app. There is also a website for doing your planning, but you cannot manually create a map (you need to record it on the trail).

You can actually use the basics without even registering a profile at all (especially if you just want to navigate a trail). It may be worth also comparing what you get here with the free version of something like the AllTrails app, as that app has a ton more trails. Still, crowdsourcing new trails and giving feedback to others is a nice concept that Hiking Project has.

Mafia: Definitive Edition - A 6-hour Long Cinematic Movie-Like Gameplay To Watch

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 25 October 2021

    https://upload.movim.eu/files/62f168f3fbecac605d21a105beda461820293db1/sFj7ZkScKoBQ/proxy.jpg

Just note, this video contains graphic language and violence, including some torture scenes. The video is just like watching a very long movie. All the cinematic type cuts and scenes you'd expect with the music, no gamer commentary, no respawning, and the story just unfolds. The only thing showing any gaming features is the small HUD gauges for the driving scenes and the hints.

But I've watched 5 hours so far, and I am waiting to see how it ends.

How to easily download and install apps on Linux with AppImage Pool

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 25 October 2021

An AppImage is an executable file type that mimics how portable EXEs are on Microsoft Windows. AppImages are great for those who want an easy way to install Linux apps. AppImages are sandboxed and run with no need to install anything on your computer. Everything necessary to run the program is compressed inside and safe from your system. Most AppImage files can be found on AppImageHub, a popular source for AppImages.

AppImagePool is an AppImageHub client for Linux. With it, users can easily browse and download AppImages from the AppImageHub store. Here’s how to get it working on your Linux system.

FNB virtual cards get tap-to-pay... Which explains why my virtual cards did not work at a POS

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 25 October 2021

Virtual cards are absolutely the way to go to separate those riskier payments, especially online, into separate virtual pockets, and to pause and reactivate cards when needed.

This however explains why my own virtual cards did not work as a tap-to-pay at a point-of-sale a while back. You just assume this is the way it works. So much for banks to catch up on, such as Discovery Bank won't let me give a custom name to each virtual card, and I only get 5 broad categories, which is a bit useless to remember which is for what online service.

The Fediverse is a collection of independently run federated servers used for web publishing and social networking, connected by open standards

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 23 October 2021

The Fediverse is an ensemble of federated (i.e. interconnected) servers that are used for web publishing (i.e. social networking, microblogging, blogging, or websites) and file hosting, but which, while independently hosted, can communicate with each other. On different servers (instances), users can create so-called identities. These identities are able to communicate over the boundaries of the instances because the software running on the servers supports one or more communication protocols which follow an open standard.

As an identity on the fediverse, users are able to post text and other media, or to follow posts by other identities. In some cases, users can even show or share data (video, audio, text, and other files) publicly or to a selected group of identities and allow other identities to edit other users' data (such as a calendar or an address book).

These communication protocols, which implement open standards, are used in the fediverse: ActivityPub, Diaspora Network, OStatus, and Zot. The diagram on the linked page shows really well how these services connect through the different protocols which they support.

Building a Raspberry Pi 4 In-Dash Car Computer with OpenAuto Pro (Video)

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 21 October 2021

    https://upload.movim.eu/files/62f168f3fbecac605d21a105beda461820293db1/tA93evqTGDly/proxy.jpg

OK this does involve some physical dash work but for older cars with either very basic or no head units, this could be worth thinking about. I must say I'm really impressed with all the functionality and integration with ODB2 sensors, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The problem with newer cars is there is often a lot of car functionality built into the head unit, e.g. climate control, etc.

Now More Electric Plug-In Car Sales Than Diesel Car Sales In Europe

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 20 October 2021

Diesel cars have long been a mainstay of the auto market in Europe (they have a much smaller market share in the US). A couple of decades ago, when concerns about carbon emissions began to surface, German automakers, rather than pursuing electrification, placed their bets on diesels, which emit slightly less carbon per mile driven than gas (petrol) vehicles. Today, after decades of deception and a few billion-dollar fines, it appears that diesel’s day is done.

About a year ago, auto industry analyst JATO Dynamics reported that sales of electrified passenger vehicles (hybrids, plug-in hybrids and pure EVs) had overtaken those of diesels for the first time ever. Now the next milestone has been passed — in August, plug-in vehicles (plug-in hybrids and pure EVs) outsold diesels in Europe for the first time, taking a 21% share of the market, compared to 20% for diesels.

Friendica - A Decentralized Federated Open-Source Social Network That You Can Self-Host

      news.movim.eu / gadgeteerza-tech-blog • 18 October 2021

Friendica is a decentralized open-source social network which federates with many other social networks including diaspora*, Hubzilla, and the Fediverse of social networks. It can mirror too with Twitter and IFTTT, or export posts to Discourse, libertree, Tumblr, Wordpress and e-mail.

It is a good candidate for being an alternative to Facebook, and you can either join a public server, or self-host your own instance.

In this video I give an overview of Friendica's functionality and features, a comparison with Hubzilla, a look at it's interface, and a tour through the settings menu. I also make the case for it being a cleaner way to use Twitter.
